NIMET Predicts 3 Days Thunderstorm

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted a wave of thunderstorms and rainfall across various regions of the country from Monday through Wednesday, advising citizens to brace for changing weather conditions and take necessary precautions.

In a weather outlook issued on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet projected that patches of cloud and morning thunderstorms would affect parts of Taraba and Adamawa States on Monday. As the day progresses, thunderstorms accompanied by rainfall are expected in parts of Zamfara, Adamawa, Kebbi, Taraba, and Kaduna States.

The North-Central region is likely to experience a mix of sunny skies and cloudy patches in the morning. However, by afternoon and evening, isolated thunderstorms and rainfall are anticipated over the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi, Niger, Benue, Plateau, and Nasarawa States.

In the South, cloudy conditions are forecast for the morning with expected rain showers across coastal areas including Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa. Rainfall will likely extend inland later in the day to states such as Oyo, Ekiti, Osun, Imo, Abia, Edo, Ebonyi, and Enugu.

On Tuesday, sunny skies with patches of clouds will dominate the northern region in the morning, with isolated thunderstorms and moderate rain expected later in Bauchi, Taraba, Kaduna, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, and Adamawa States.

The North-Central region will remain partly cloudy in the morning. However, isolated thunderstorms with rainfall are expected over FCT, Kwara, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, Plateau, and Niger by afternoon and evening.

Meanwhile, the southern states will begin the day with light showers in Cross River, Bayelsa, Delta, and Akwa Ibom. These are expected to intensify in the evening across Ekiti, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Oyo, Ondo, Delta, Edo, Rivers, and Lagos.

By Wednesday, the weather pattern is expected to continue with morning thunderstorms over parts of Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, and Gombe. Later in the day, heavy rains and thunderstorms are predicted in Sokoto, Kebbi, Kano, Katsina, Taraba, Adamawa, and Zamfara.

In the North-Central, cloudy skies will dominate the morning period with thunderstorms and rain forecast to spread across the region later. Similarly, the entire southern region is expected to be cloudy in the morning, followed by isolated rainfall across most parts of the zone.

NiMet cautioned the public to remain vigilant, warning that strong winds may precede the rainfall in areas likely to experience thunderstorms. The agency urged residents to secure loose objects to prevent accidents, avoid driving in heavy rain, and disconnect electrical appliances to guard against power surges.

“Stay away from tall trees to avoid falling branches or uprooted trees during stormy weather,” the advisory warned.

Airline operators were also advised to obtain updated, airport-specific weather information for proper flight planning.

NiMet concluded by urging Nigerians to remain updated with the latest forecasts by visiting the agency’s official website: www.nimet.gov.ng.
