Mbah Denies Rumours of Defection to APC

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has dispelled rumors of his planned defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating categorically that he remains a member of the party.
Speaking during an interactive session with members of the Nigerian Guild of Editors on Saturday in Enugu, Mbah emphasized his commitment to the PDP, pointing to the party’s flag behind him as a symbol of his allegiance.
“I am still in the PDP, as you can see, the flag behind me is that of the PDP,” he said, putting to rest speculations about his possible exit from the party.
Mbah acknowledged that the PDP is facing challenges, but noted that this is not unique to the party, as other political parties in the country are also grappling with their own issues.
However, he expressed confidence that the PDP would soon overcome its problems and emerge stronger.
On the issue of independent candidacy, Mbah stated that the Nigerian constitution does not provide for individuals to run for office without the sponsorship of a political party.
He argued that even if someone were to run as an independent candidate, they would still need to engage in politics and build alliances to succeed.
Mbah’s comments come as a relief to PDP supporters in Enugu State, who had been worried about the possibility of their governor defecting to another party.
The governor’s reassurance is likely to boost morale and stability within the party, as it prepares for future elections.
In a related development, Mbah revealed that his political rival in the 2023 Governorship election, Mr. Chijioke Edeoga, has returned to the PDP and is now working with him to move Enugu State forward.
This development has brought a measure of peace to the state’s political landscape, as the two former opponents are now collaborating to achieve common goals.
“We’re working closely together, and that has also brought a lot of peace as we are not spending money dealing with all sorts of political fights,” Mbah said. “We are quite peaceful here in terms of politics and working together. We have to collaborate with an institution or a person to achieve our common goal and build our state.”
Mbah’s commitment to the PDP and his willingness to work with former opponents are seen as positive developments for the party and the state.
