Shettima Announces Nationwide Tree-Planting Campaign to Combat Environmental Degradation

Vice President Kashim Shettima has announced that Nigeria will initiate a nationwide tree-planting campaign during the forthcoming rainy season as part of its renewed push toward reforestation and environmental sustainability.
The Vice President made this known as the federal government intensifies efforts to combat the effects of deforestation, desertification, and climate change across the country.
The initiative, which is expected to roll out in collaboration with state governments and environmental stakeholders, is part of Nigeria’s broader climate resilience agenda.
Shettima noted that the tree-planting drive aligns with the government’s long-term strategy to restore degraded ecosystems, improve air quality, combat desert encroachment—particularly in the northern regions—and support global commitments to reducing carbon emissions.
“Our goal is to green our nation again and secure the livelihoods of future generations,” he said, emphasizing that the upcoming rainy season provides a natural opportunity to kick-start large-scale planting across diverse ecological zones.
While further details about the number of trees to be planted, the implementing agencies, and specific locations are yet to be disclosed, the campaign signals a notable shift toward practical environmental action under the current administration.
This development comes on the heels of Shettima’s recent participation in Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative, where he endorsed continental cooperation on sustainable environmental practices.
The nationwide tree-planting campaign is expected to be a cornerstone in Nigeria’s evolving climate policy and a vital step in reversing years of environmental neglect.
