Kano Governor Earmarks N2 Billion to Rebuild Fire-Damaged Farm Centre GSM Market

In an extensive effort to rejuvenate one of Kano’s most essential commercial centers, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has unveiled a ₦2 billion redevelopment scheme for the Farm Centre GSM Market following recent catastrophic fire incidents.

During his visit to the market on Friday, Governor Yusuf stated that the investment would not only restore the damaged sections but also modernize and expand the market to better accommodate its myriad users.

“This intervention is not merely a reaction to the tragic fire episode but a strategic endeavor to fortify our economy, generate employment, and position Kano as a pivotal player in regional commerce,” the governor declared, addressing the traders and market leaders assembled at the site.

The governor was accompanied by high-ranking government officials and received an enthusiastic reception from the market community. The announcement was subsequently corroborated in a statement by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

Governor Yusuf outlined that the ambitious redevelopment initiative includes the reconstruction of fire-damaged sections, acquisition of land for market expansion, and the establishment of a fully-equipped fire station.

To tackle longstanding infrastructure issues, the governor also disclosed plans for the installation of solar-powered streetlights, construction of a pedestrian bridge to alleviate congestion, enhancement of drainage systems to prevent flooding, and refurbishment of internal roads.

“We are constructing not just a market, but a resilient trading center,” Yusuf stated. “We aspire for this market to be a hub for international commerce, linked with our neighbors and open to opportunities beyond our borders.”

He further added that the state government would institute a dedicated management framework for the GSM Market to ensure accountability and seamless operations.

He urged market users to collaborate closely with law enforcement to combat the rising incidents of phone snatching and minor theft.

“Our investment extends beyond infrastructure to encompass the security of the people. Traders and customers must feel secure conducting business here,” he asserted.

In his response, the Chairman of the Farm Centre GSM Market, Jamilu Gama, praised the government’s intervention as timely and profoundly reassuring.

“Our traders are filled with gratitude. This is a clear indication that our hardships have not gone unnoticed,” he remarked. “We endured significant losses due to the fire, but today we feel hopeful once again.”

He pointed out that the market, comprising 20 plazas and serving as a vital hub for mobile phones and tech services, offers direct employment to over 39,000 youths — making it one of the largest informal technology-based employment centers in the region.

Governor Yusuf reiterated his administration’s dedication to youth empowerment, emphasizing that the state’s 26 vocational training institutes would persist in equipping young individuals with essential skills.

“Skills development remains central to our vision. We will continue to invest in our youth to mitigate unemployment and drive progress,” he affirmed.
