Weekend Window Opens, Offering Greater Flexibility, According to FIRS

By Arabinrin Aderonke

In Nigeria, weekends are generally regarded as communal time dedicated to markets, family activities, and addressing tasks that the busyness of the week has prevented. Consequently, when a government agency announces weekend office hours, it captures public interest due to its rarity.

The norm has been stories of agencies that struggle to fulfill their duties during traditional five-day workweeks. This makes the recent initiative by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), led by Executive Chairman Dr. Zacch Adedeji, noteworthy. From June 14 to 29, FIRS offices across the country will operate on Saturdays and Sundays to assist Nigerians with tax services.

This move is not merely for show; it addresses a critical need. As the deadline for Companies Income Tax filing approaches, many individuals and businesses are eager to fulfill their responsibilities before June 30. The offices will be open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

For those unable to leave their jobs or close shops during weekdays, this weekend service provides essential flexibility and alleviates pressure. More importantly, it demonstrates the often-overlooked quality of empathy in public service.

This initiative is not confined to certain branches; it encompasses all relevant FIRS offices within the Large Taxpayers Group, Government and Medium Taxpayers Group, and Emerging Taxpayers Group. From Lagos Island to Kwara and in both urban centers and smaller towns, offices will be available to assist. This means that a larger number of Nigerians, regardless of their location, can utilize weekend services. The success of this initiative reflects a leadership approach committed to institutional reform.

Since taking office in 2023, the Tax Chief has prioritized both revenue performance and the enhancement of internal capabilities. Employee pay has been improved, promotions are now linked to defined performance criteria, and employee welfare has been given renewed focus. These reforms have contributed to a more motivated workforce, as acknowledged by staff during this year’s Workers’ Day celebrations. This internal transformation is significantly improving public service delivery within the agency.

At the same time, FIRS is ambitiously targeting a national revenue goal of ₦25.2 trillion by 2025, following a record ₦21.6 trillion in 2024. Instead of employing pressure tactics or reactive strategies, the agency is investing in scalable infrastructure and technological advancements.

Through initiatives like the TaxPro Max platform and the creation of more accessible satellite offices, FIRS is showcasing its commitment to inclusion, efficiency, and voluntary compliance. The weekend extension aligns with this broader mission, serving as a practical example of how public institutions can be both responsive and forward-thinking.

Bravo, Nigeria, for aspiring to improve. Kudos for prioritizing service and for holding systems to higher standards. Well done to Dr. Zacch for demonstrating that leadership can listen, act, and effect meaningful change. This initiative is not solely about convenience; it represents progress in significant ways. Let’s build on this momentum.
