Saraki Storms Enugu on Peace Mission to Keep South East in PDP

In a bid to address the lingering crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a delegation of the party’s Special Reconciliation Committee, led by former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, on Friday, met with Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, at the Government House in Enugu.

The meeting, which was held behind closed doors, was attended by other members of the committee, including former Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Seriake Dickson, and former Gombe State Governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo.

The visit is part of the committee’s efforts to resolve the crisis rocking the party, particularly in the South-East region, where leaders have threatened to exit the party if their demands are not met.

Recall that the PDP leaders in the South-East had, in a communiqué issued after the South-East PDP Zonal Executive Council meeting two weeks ago, announced the re-nomination of former PDP National Youth Leader, Sunday Udeh-Okoye, to serve out the remaining tenure of the National Secretary.

The leaders had warned that if their decision is not respected, it could lead to a possible exodus of party members from the region.

The development has raised concerns about the party’s unity and prospects ahead of future elections.

The Saraki-led committee’s meeting with Governor Mbah is seen as a crucial step towards resolving the crisis and preventing a potential split within the party.

The committee is expected to engage with other stakeholders and party leaders in the region to find a lasting solution to the crisis.

Speaking after the meeting, Saraki expressed optimism that the committee would be able to find a way to resolve the differences and strengthen the party.

He emphasized the importance of unity and cohesion within the party, particularly in the face of upcoming elections.

“We are committed to listening to all parties and finding a solution that works for everyone. We believe that the PDP is a big family, and we must work together to achieve our goals,” Saraki said.

The outcome of the meeting is still unclear, but sources close to the committee indicate that progress was made, and further discussions are expected to take place in the coming days.

The PDP has been grappling with internal crises in recent times, with various factions and interest groups vying for control. The party’s ability to resolve its internal differences and present a united front will be crucial to its chances of success in future elections.
