Cross River Governor Condemns Attack on Obi’s Convoy, Reaffirms Commitment to Peaceful Political Activities

Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has expressed strong displeasure over the reported attack on the convoy of Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), in Calabar, describing the incident as contrary to the values of the state.

The incident reportedly involved suspected political thugs who attacked the convoy during Obi’s visit to the Cross River State capital.

Reacting through a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Linus Obogo, the governor expressed sympathy with Obi and members of his entourage, describing the development as deeply regrettable.

Otu maintained that Cross River State had always welcomed political actors across party lines and remained committed to ensuring that everyone could participate in political activities without threats, harassment or intimidation.

He noted that the incident was inconsistent with the state’s reputation for hospitality, tolerance and peaceful coexistence, stressing that political differences should never become a justification for violence.

The governor further lamented that the development had brought distress to the state, given its longstanding commitment to maintaining an atmosphere of mutual respect and cordial relations among residents and visitors.

He reiterated the government’s solidarity with Obi and his team, assuring them of its commitment to protecting the rights of individuals to engage in lawful political activities.

Otu emphasised that acts capable of undermining public confidence, creating fear or disrupting democratic participation would not be tolerated in Cross River State.
