Ogun Man Jailed 3 Years for Stealing Solar Streetlight in Sagamu
A 26-year-old man, identified as Anthony Cephas, has been sentenced to three years in prison for stealing a solar-powered streetlight installed along the Sagamu Interchange Expressway in Ogun State.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the conviction, stating that the suspect was apprehended by detectives attached to the Sagamu Division following an investigation into the theft.
The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed the development in a statement, noting that Cephas was arrested on October 30, 2026, at approximately 9 p.m. in the Mayegun area of Sagamu.
Police operatives reportedly recovered the stolen streetlight, alongside its solar panel, during the arrest. The items were subsequently retained as exhibits in the case.
Babaseyi explained that investigations were concluded before the suspect was taken before a court on November 2, 2026, where he was found guilty and handed a three-year prison sentence.
The police spokesperson described the arrest and successful prosecution as the outcome of the division’s investigation, which led to the recovery of the stolen public infrastructure.
The development highlights the consequences of vandalising or stealing public facilities, particularly infrastructure installed to improve security and provide essential services to communities.
