Carrick Rejects Two Game Deadline Talk as Manchester United Prepare for Roma

Manchester United manager, Michael Carrick has dismissed suggestions that he has only two matches left to save his job, insisting that the growing pressure has not changed how he feels or how his team is preparing for Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Roma.

Speaking at his pre match press conference on Monday, Carrick was asked whether he felt he was a manager with just two games left, the Roma fixture and Sunday’s Premier League game against Aston Villa, which comes right before the international break. The 45 year old, in his first full season in charge, answered “No, not at all.” He said no one can see into the future and that he is really looking forward to the Roma game.

The questions over his position have grown after United’s 2-0 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday, which extended their winless run in all competitions to nine games, their longest such sequence in 42 years.

The club have taken just seven points from their nine league matches and sit one place above the relegation zone, while they are 20th in the Champions League table following a 4-1 loss away at Como last month. Reports in England have also suggested that the United hierarchy could use the break to decide his future.

Carrick was also asked about defender Lisandro Martinez, who was sent off at Stamford Bridge and whose commitment has been questioned. The United boss said he has no concerns on that front. He added that the team need to play better and make better decisions, but that commitment is not an issue.

Carrick has happy memories of facing Roma, having scored twice for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side in their 7-1 Champions League quarter final second leg win over the Italians in 2007.
