Court TrashesSuit Seeking £950 Trillion Damage Against Atiku as Frivolous

A High Court in Abuja has thrown out a lawsuit seeking £950 trillion in damages, filed by businessman, Tunde Omosebi against former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and several others.
The court deemed the case to be without merit and excessively frivolous.
In a ruling delivered by Justice James Omotosho, the court cited numerous procedural errors and a lack of credible grounds for the lawsuit.
Omosebi had initially filed the suit against four defendants, including Hallies & Partner Ltd, Atiku Abubakar, Clifford Odibe, and Daniel Mbohok, but later expanded the list to 13 without obtaining the court’s permission.
Omosebi, who claims to be a businessman and politician, alleged that he was assaulted and intimidated by agents of Hallies & Partner Ltd at his office in July 2023.
He sought an enormous sum in compensation, as well as a court order requiring the defendants to issue public apologies and restricting them from approaching his businesses and properties.
However, Justice Omotosho was unsympathetic to Omosebi’s claims, noting that the lawsuit was part of a larger pattern of abusive litigations.
The judge pointed out that Omosebi had filed a separate lawsuit against the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, and others, seeking an equally outlandish £990 trillion in damages.
The court’s decision serves as a warning to individuals who seek to abuse the legal system with frivolous and exaggerated claims. Justice Omotosho urged the Nigerian Bar Association to take steps to prevent such cases from being brought before the court, and to ensure that lawyers are held to a higher standard of professionalism and integrity.
By dismissing Omosebi’s lawsuit, the court has sent a clear message that it will not tolerate abusive litigation and will prioritize the efficient use of judicial resources.
