Edo Pardons Over 500 Cultists After Renunciation

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo has granted amnesty to more than 500 members of various cult groups who publicly renounced their involvement in cultism during a ceremony in Benin City.

The event, organised by the Edo State Special Security Squad (ESSSS), was held on Monday as part of the state government’s efforts to tackle cult-related violence, kidnapping and other criminal activities.

Addressing the beneficiaries, Okpebholo warned that his administration would not tolerate criminality, regardless of the individuals involved or their relationship with him.

The governor declared that even his own son would not be spared if he became involved in cultism or kidnapping, stressing that protecting residents remained his primary responsibility.

He also said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and security agencies were supporting efforts to rid the state of criminal activities.

Okpebholo warned individuals who continued to engage in criminal acts that they would find no hiding place in Edo, insisting that his administration would enforce the law without fear or favour.

Earlier, the Coordinator of the Edo State Special Security Squad, Naoh Idemudia, said the outfit had recorded progress in supporting the government’s efforts to improve security since its establishment.

Idemudia attributed the achievements to the governor’s backing and political commitment, adding that the squad had adopted approaches designed to complement conventional security agencies in protecting lives and property.

He commended the governor for providing the support and operational platform required for the outfit to carry out its responsibilities.

The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Patrick Daaor, also urged young people involved in cultism to abandon the practice, warning that it could destroy their lives and future prospects.

He said many young people had lost their lives and opportunities after joining cult groups, describing the amnesty programme as an opportunity for beneficiaries to change their behaviour and rebuild their lives.

Daaor commended the initiative and urged those who renounced cultism to remain committed to their decision and avoid returning to criminal activities.

The programme forms part of ongoing efforts by the Edo State Government and security agencies to discourage cultism, prevent violence and improve public safety across the state.
