Champions League: Arsenal, Barcelona Stay Perfect as Brugge Stun Inter, Viking Hold Bayern
Nine matches and 32 goals on Tuesday made for a dramatic second round of fixtures in the Champions League league phase. Arsenal and Barcelona stayed perfect, while Inter Milan, Bayern Munich and Manchester United all had nights to forget.
Arsenal beat Lille 3-0 at home after a goalless first hour. Jurrien Timber, Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka scored between the 64th and 71st minutes.
Barcelona won 4-1 away at Galatasaray after falling behind to a Batrakov goal in the 28th minute. Joao Cancelo equalised before half-time, and Fermin Lopez, Anthony Gordon (his first Champions League goal for the club) and Adeyemi scored in the second half.
Sporting CP also made it two wins from two with a 2-0 victory at Lens.
The night’s biggest shock came in Milan, where Club Brugge won 4-3 at Inter. Nicolo Tresoldi scored a hat-trick, including a first-half penalty. Lautaro Martinez scored twice for Inter, but Romeo Vermant restored Brugge’s two-goal cushion late on. Ange-Yoan Bonny’s stoppage-time goal made it 4-3 but came too late to save a second straight defeat. Inter are now pointless after two games.
In Norway, Viking led Bayern Munich 2-0 through goals from Stensness and Christiansen. Harry Kane scored twice, and Bayern led 3-2 even after Michael Olise was sent off. Herman Haugen then equalised for Viking in the 90th minute to make it 3-3.
Manchester United lost 2-0 at Atletico Madrid. Pablo Barrios scored in the first minute, and Ademola Lookman added a late second after Leny Yoro was sent off in the 74th minute. Villarreal beat Napoli 3-1, RB Leipzig edged PSV 1-0, and Sabah beat Slavia Prague 2-0.
Barcelona, Sporting and Arsenal lead the table on six points each, with Bayern fourth on four. Napoli, Lille, Galatasaray, Slavia Prague and Inter are all yet to pick up a point.
Action continues on Wednesday with Manchester City hosting Paris Saint-Germain and Roma welcoming Real Madrid. Liverpool visit LASK Linz, Aston Villa host Fenerbahce, Borussia Dortmund travel to Bodo/Glimt, and Real Betis face Porto.
