Trump Brushes Off Claims that China, Russia Are Backing Iran in War with US
US President, Donald Trump has dismissed claims that China and Russia are helping Iran, saying he does not believe the two powers are assisting Tehran “at all”.
In a post on his Truth Social platform late on Monday, Trump said he had seen many comments from critics, whom he branded “Radical Left Morons and Lunatics”, alleging that Beijing and Moscow were supporting the Islamic Republic.
“If they are, it’s at a very low level, but I don’t believe they are at all,” Trump wrote. He added that both countries have too much to lose by getting involved, and that Washington would know about any such help “very fast”.
The president has faced pressure over reports that Chinese and Russian entities have supplied Iran with intelligence used in attacks on American troops. Those reports have not been independently verified, and China has denied giving Iran military assistance. Russia has sent humanitarian aid to Iran but has not officially announced any other concrete support.
Trump has repeatedly played down the risk of Chinese or Russian involvement. He said in July that he trusted both countries not to help Tehran, warning that it would be very bad for them if they did, and he has previously described Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin as neutral in the war.
Last month, he cautioned Xi against backing Iran during the Chinese leader’s visit to Washington, and the US ambassador to China said Beijing gave assurances that it would not do so.
Beijing and Moscow nonetheless maintain close ties with Tehran. China has condemned the American attacks as a brazen violation of Iran’s sovereignty, while Russia has warned that the war could trigger a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.
The conflict began on February 28, when the United States and Israel attacked Iran and Tehran hit back with strikes on Israel and on Gulf states that host American bases.
The fighting, together with Israeli attacks on Lebanon, has since killed thousands of people and displaced millions.
