Oyo Police Arrest Man Allegedly Planning to Avenge Brother’s Death
The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a man who allegedly travelled from Anambra State to avenge his brother’s death, recovering a pistol and a live cartridge from him during a stop-and-search operation.
The suspect was intercepted by operatives of the Safer Highway Patrol along Ife Road while travelling in a commercial bus, according to the police.
The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olushola Olayinka, said the suspect’s responses during questioning suggested that he had travelled to Oyo State to carry out a revenge killing over his brother’s death.
Police reportedly discovered the firearm and ammunition during a search of the suspect.
During questioning, the suspect said he was working in Benue State when he received information that his brother had died at a school in Oka, allegedly after being killed by another person.
He explained that he returned after learning of his brother’s death but lost his mother a few weeks later.
The suspect said he subsequently received information that the person he believed was responsible for his brother’s death was living in Oyo State. He then decided to travel there to locate the individual.
When asked where he obtained the firearm, the suspect reportedly said he bought it from a friend for ₦20,000, adding that he was unsure whether the seller was a hunter.
The suspect also admitted to belonging to the Vikings confraternity when questioned about membership of a cult group.
However, he said he could not confirm whether his deceased brother belonged to any cult group because they attended different schools.
The police said the suspect was undergoing investigation to establish his connections and determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged revenge plot.
The command commended the officers involved in the operation for intercepting the suspect and said investigations were continuing.
