Prosperity Must Reflect in Nigerian Homes, Cheaper Food, Transport, Energy, CAN Tells FG
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on the Federal Government to make sure its promise of prosperity translates into cheaper food, lower transport and energy costs, jobs for young people and safer communities.
The call was contained in an Independence Day statement by the CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, as Nigeria marked its 66th anniversary.
He said the association welcomed the government’s shift from an era of economic reforms to an era of prosperity, but insisted that Nigerians must feel the difference in their daily lives.
According to Okoh, the true measure of progress cannot be found in statistics alone. He said the real question is whether families can afford food, young people can find decent work, communities can live in safety and every child has a fair chance to build a future.
CAN urged the government to treat lower food, transport and energy costs as a measurable priority, arguing that Nigerians who have endured years of economic pressure deserve visible relief. The body also asked for stronger support for vulnerable families, education, healthcare and affordable credit, with transparent administration and safeguards against diversion.
On security, the association said prosperity would mean little where citizens cannot farm, trade, travel or sleep peacefully because of fear.
Turning to the 2027 political season, CAN warned politicians against dragging Christianity into partisan battles. It said no politician is the Messiah, adding that Christians are free to support or criticise any candidate, but the name of Jesus Christ must not be used as a political weapon.
The Association reaffirmed its commitment to remaining a nonpartisan moral voice that will commend what is right, speak when citizens are hurting and hold leaders to the values of justice, accountability and compassion.
