Abia State Government to Convert Newly Built Government House into Five-Star Hotel

The Abia State Government has announced plans to convert the newly constructed Government House at Ogurube Layout, Umuahia, into a five-star hotel, citing concerns over the building’s security, structural issues, and poor design for residential use.

The decision, disclosed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, follows a thorough assessment of the facility, which was commissioned by former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu shortly before leaving office.

According to Kanu, the building is unfit for use as a government residence, prompting the current administration to seek alternative uses for the structure.

During a recent press tour of the facility, Kanu criticized the building’s design, noting that it lacks basic residential features such as wardrobes, functional elevators, and properly finished floors. He explained that only the first floor appears completed, while the upper levels remain unplastered, posing significant safety risks.

“The so-called Government House is not even fit for the Governor to live in. From a security standpoint, it’s risky, and from a structural perspective, it is incomplete,” Kanu stated.

“It lacks basic amenities required for a governor’s residence, and its location within a private residential area further exposes it to security threats.”

In light of these issues, the Abia State Government has opted to repurpose the building as a five-star hotel, aiming to generate revenue and boost the state’s hospitality sector.

The move is part of a broader effort to utilize public assets more effectively and reduce wasteful spending.

Meanwhile, the government has also announced plans to construct a new, purpose-built Government House on the site of the former official residence, which officials say will provide a more secure and functional space for the governor and his staff.

Addressing recent claims that the previous Government House was a rented property, Kanu clarified that the state government had, in fact, purchased the property. He accused the former administration of misleading the public by collecting rent from government funds while presenting the property as a temporary arrangement.

Kanu urged citizens to disregard opposition narratives and support the current administration’s efforts to provide transparent and effective leadership, noting that the decision to repurpose the new Government House reflects a commitment to prudent resource management.

As the Abia State Government moves forward with these plans, officials hope that transforming the underutilized structure into a luxury hotel will not only boost tourism and local employment but also set a new standard for public asset management in the state.
