Wedding Reception Turns Chaotic as Bride, Mother-in-Law Exchange Slaps Over Food
A wedding reception has become the subject of widespread online discussion after a video alleging that a bride and her mother-in-law exchanged slaps over a dispute involving food went viral.
According to the account, the altercation occurred after food ran out at the reception, with a couple from the groom’s family reportedly arriving late to meet only the portion of food the bride had set aside for her own parents.
The groom’s mother reportedly asked the bride quietly if she could give some of the remaining food to the late arriving relatives, who were said to have travelled a long distance for the event. The bride, however, allegedly declined the request. When the mother-in-law attempted to serve the food herself, the bride reportedly collected it and poured it back into the cooler, an action that prompted the older woman to slap her.
The bride was said to have retaliated by slapping her mother-in-law in return. Throughout the confrontation, the groom reportedly remained calm and did not intervene until after the reception had ended, though he was said to have later sought to dissolve the marriage just two days after the wedding.
The story has since sparked heated reactions online, with opinions largely divided over who was at fault. Some commentators blamed the bride’s conduct, questioning why she would allow the dispute to escalate to physical violence with her husband’s mother rather than exercising restraint.
Others suggested the incident may have revealed deeper unresolved issues within the relationship, with some users advising that a longer courtship period could have helped uncover warning signs before marriage. A number of commentators also used the incident to highlight the broader challenges of managing in-law relationships around weddings, noting that issues involving food, drinks and souvenirs often generate friction that can persist well beyond the wedding day itself.
A lawyer who addressed the matter in the same broadcast that first reported the story clarified aspects of Nigerian law relevant to the dispute, though the broader conversation online has continued to center on questions of respect, boundaries and conflict resolution between newlyweds and their in-laws.
