President Bola Tinubu has urged ECOWAS leaders to speak with one voice against the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa. He described the violence targeting Nigerians and other Africans as unacceptable and against the spirit of African unity. Tinubu made the call during the 69th Ordinary Session of ECOWAS in Sierra Leone.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the President said a strong joint condemnation would send a clear message that such intolerance will not be tolerated. He noted that Nigeria has already evacuated over 1,490 citizens in several batches and is ready to do more if needed.

Tinubu reminded South Africa that its current freedom came from the sacrifices of many African nations, including Nigeria. He asked ECOWAS to take the matter to the African Union for further discussion and action.

Beyond the attacks, the President reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for deeper regional integration. He backed the new ECOWAS Compact for the Future, which aims to strengthen cooperation, improve governance, and promote economic growth across West Africa.

The statement highlights Nigeria’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad while pushing for stronger African solidarity. Leaders are expected to discuss concrete steps to address xenophobia and prevent future incidents.
