Citizens Democratic Alliance Accuses INEC of Defying Court Order
The Citizens Democratic Alliance has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission of failing to comply with a court order directing it to register the association as a political party.
The group said the Abuja federal high court had ordered INEC to issue a certificate of registration to the CDA within seven days. The deadline has since expired without compliance.
The CDA’s national publicity secretary, Umar Abdullahi, said the alliance complied with the court’s directive by obtaining the registration certificate and formally serving it on INEC. The group expressed disappointment that INEC has neither issued the certificate nor provided any lawful reason for the continued non-compliance.
The alliance said it believes the rule of law is the foundation of constitutional democracy. It called on INEC to respect court orders to preserve public confidence in the administration of justice. The CDA urged civil society organisations, the media, legal professionals, pro-democracy advocates, and Nigerians to defend the rule of law by demanding compliance with the court’s judgment.
The group said it remains peaceful, law-abiding, and committed to advancing democratic governance while providing Nigerians with a credible political alternative through lawful means. The development has sparked discussions about the independence of the electoral body and the importance of respecting judicial decisions.
The CDA’s accusation highlights ongoing tensions between political associations and the electoral commission. Many are watching to see how INEC will respond to the claims. The matter is likely to attract more attention as the 2027 elections approach. The group said it will continue to pursue its registration through legal means.
