Focus on Entrepreneurship, Akwa Ibom Governor Charges Corps Members
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno has advised National Youth Service Corps members posted to the state to embrace entrepreneurship rather than depending on scarce white-collar jobs after their service.
The governor emphasised that acquiring entrepreneurial skills would help young graduates become employers of labour and gain financial independence. He made the call while declaring open the 2026 NYSC Corps Employers’ Workshop in Uyo.
Eno, represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Dr Ekerette Ekanem, encouraged corps members to make the most of the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme.
He pointed out that Nigeria’s increasing population and limited resources make self-employment a necessary path for the youth. The governor also commended corps members for their dedication and contributions to the state’s progress.
The Director-General of the NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, described corps employers as important partners in the success of the scheme. He urged employers to create supportive work environments, offer quality mentorship, and provide adequate welfare for corps members. Nafiu reminded employers of their responsibilities, such as providing accommodation, transport support, healthcare, and security.
The Akwa Ibom State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Ngozi Akuagbaogu, explained that the annual workshop aims to strengthen collaboration between the scheme, corps employers, and other stakeholders.
The forum provides an opportunity to review current efforts, identify challenges, and develop strategies to improve the welfare and productivity of corps members.
The SAED programme was introduced to equip corps members with vocational and business skills to promote self-employment amid high unemployment rates. Governor Umo Eno’s advice highlights the growing importance of entrepreneurship as a solution to youth unemployment in Nigeria.
The workshop is expected to produce practical recommendations to enhance the service experience of corps members across the country.
