Nigerian Navy Inaugurates Town Hall, 5000 KVA Transformer in Imo Community
The Nigerian Navy has commissioned a 5,000 KVA transformer and a new town hall in Umuokoro Lowa Uboma, Ihitte-Uboma Local Government Area of Imo State, restoring electricity to the community after three years without power.
The projects were inaugurated by the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, as part of the Nigerian Navy’s efforts to strengthen military-civil relations through community development initiatives.
The intervention was facilitated by Rear Admiral Michael Igwe, Director of Weapon Electrical Engineering at the Naval Headquarters and an indigene of the community.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Vice Admiral Abbas, represented by the Chief of Naval Transformation and Innovation, Rear Admiral Chijioke Onyemaobi, said civil-military cooperation involves collaboration between the armed forces and civilian communities to achieve broader national objectives.
He explained that the projects form part of the Navy’s Special Quick Impact Project, introduced in 2024 to recognise distinguished senior officers through developmental projects that directly benefit their communities.
According to him, the newly commissioned facilities are expected to improve the living conditions of residents while strengthening the relationship between the military and host communities.
Abbas urged residents to protect the infrastructure and continue working closely with security agencies to promote peace, security and national development.
Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, represented by his deputy, Chinyere Ekomaru, commended President Bola Tinubu for his continued support for the Armed Forces and praised the Nigerian Navy for the intervention.
She described the projects as a demonstration of the Navy’s commitment to community development, national unity and improved living standards.
In his welcome address, Rear Admiral Igwe said the projects were designed to address long-standing challenges faced by the Umuokoro and Umunzeduru communities, particularly the prolonged power outage that had affected residents for about three years.
