NAF Adds 3 New AW109 Trekker Helicopters to Platforms from Italy
The Nigerian Air Force has successfully completed the Factory Acceptance Test for three additional AW109 Trekker Type B helicopters at Leonardo Helicopters’ facility in Vergiate, Italy, marking another milestone in the country’s ongoing fleet modernisation programme.
The exercise, conducted from June 29 to July 3, 2026, involved a joint delegation from the NAF and the Ministry of Defence who carried out detailed inspections and flight evaluations to confirm the helicopters met contractual specifications ahead of their delivery to Nigeria.
NAF spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame said the successful acceptance exercise reflects the steady progress being made under the Service’s fleet modernisation initiative, describing it as proof of the NAF’s commitment to inducting only reliable, mission-ready platforms. He noted that the newly accepted helicopters are expected to improve responsiveness, operational reach and mission effectiveness in the ongoing counter-terrorism, counter-insurgency and anti-banditry campaigns being waged across various theatres of operation nationwide.
The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, described the acquisition as another important step in strengthening the NAF’s capacity to deliver air power in coordination with ground forces, deny criminal elements freedom of movement, and enhance security nationwide. He reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to building a professional, mission-ready force capable of supporting Nigeria’s national security objectives.
The Air Force said the milestone reflects the continued backing of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in strengthening the operational capabilities of the Armed Forces. The AW109 Trekker is a twin-engine, multi-role helicopter used for combat search and rescue, tactical airlift and medical evacuation, and forms part of a broader deal with Italian defence firm Leonardo that also includes 24 M-346 fighter jets, part of Nigeria’s wider push to renew its ageing military aircraft fleet amid persistent insurgency and banditry threats.
