Benue Government Dismantles Illegal Roadblocks, Warns Against Extortion

The Benue State Government has dismantled more than 20 illegal roadblocks along the Vandeikya–Konshisha Road as part of efforts to curb extortion, improve security, and ensure the free movement of people and goods across the state.

The exercise was led by the Special Adviser to Governor Hyacinth Alia on Security and Internal Affairs, Joseph Har, who said the operation followed complaints from motorists, traders, and residents over persistent harassment and illegal collection of money at unauthorized checkpoints.

He disclosed that while inspecting the route, authorities discovered over 20 checkpoints, but only three were legally approved and jointly operated by the Nigeria Police Force and the Benue State Community Volunteer Guards.

The remaining roadblocks, he said, had been illegally mounted by individuals posing as Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO), youth groups, and unauthorized security personnel.

He described the illegal checkpoints as a major impediment to economic activities, noting that commercial drivers, farmers, and traders had been subjected to repeated extortion and unnecessary delays while transporting goods and passengers.

"The government will not tolerate any form of illegal checkpoint or extortion on our roads. Anyone found mounting unauthorized roadblocks or collecting money from road users will be arrested and prosecuted," Har warned.

The security adviser also cautioned members of the Benue State Civil Protection Guards against operating beyond their statutory responsibilities, stressing that only duly authorized security agencies are permitted to establish checkpoints in the state.

According to him, some rogue members of local security outfits implicated in the illegal activities have already been identified, disarmed, and taken into custody as part of the ongoing enforcement exercise.

Har urged residents to report cases of illegal roadblocks, harassment, or extortion to relevant security agencies, assuring them that the state government would continue to monitor highways and remove all unauthorized checkpoints.

The latest crackdown forms part of Governor Hyacinth Alia's administration's broader efforts to strengthen internal security, restore public confidence, and create a safer environment for residents, businesses, and commuters across Benue State.
