Gov. Lawal Bans Farming on Zamfara Cemeteries, Declares Burial Grounds Sacred

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, has ordered an immediate ban on farming activities in cemeteries across the state, declaring that burial grounds are sacred places that must be protected from desecration.

The governor issued the directive during an inspection of a cemetery in Gusau, the state capital, where he expressed concern over the cultivation of crops within burial sites.

He described the practice as disrespectful to the dead and contrary to the cultural and religious values of the people. "Cemeteries are sacred. They are not farmland," Lawal said, warning that any crops found on burial grounds would be removed and that those who continue to violate the directive would face appropriate sanctions.

He stressed that cemeteries are designated solely for the burial and remembrance of the deceased and should not be converted into agricultural land under any circumstance.

The governor directed local government authorities, traditional rulers, community leaders and relevant government agencies to enforce the ban across all 14 local government areas of the state.

He also called on residents to respect the sanctity of burial grounds and cooperate with government efforts to preserve them. Lawal noted that protecting cemeteries is part of his administration's commitment to safeguarding public facilities and upholding the state's cultural and religious heritage.

He added that monitoring teams would be deployed to ensure full compliance with the directive. The order comes amid broader efforts by the Zamfara State Government to improve the management and preservation of public cemeteries.

Earlier this year, the administration announced plans to develop modern cemetery facilities across the state to provide dignified burial spaces for residents.

The governor reaffirmed his administration's resolve to ensure that public spaces are used only for their intended purposes, urging citizens to support policies aimed at preserving the dignity of the deceased and maintaining respect for community values.
