Mexico Knockout Ecuador in 2026 World Cup

Mexico booked their place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a 2-0 victory over Ecuador in a Round of 32 clash at the Mexico City Stadium, securing the co-hosts their first World Cup knockout stage win in 40 years.

Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez were on target for El Tri as Javier Aguirre’s side controlled proceedings from start to finish in front of their home fans.

Quinones broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute, cutting inside from the flank before powering a shot into the top corner to send the home crowd into raptures. Nine minutes later, Mexico doubled their advantage when Jimenez pounced on a defensive error from Ecuador’s Joel Ordonez, combining in a slick give-and-go with Quinones before rifling the ball into the corner of the net to make it 2-0 inside the opening half-hour.

Ecuador, who had reached the knockout rounds despite going goalless in their opening two group matches, were unable to find a way back into the contest and struggled to create clear-cut chances against a well-organised Mexican defence. Their afternoon went from bad to worse in stoppage time when defender Piero Hincapie was shown a red card following a confrontational incident, leaving the South Americans to see out the closing stages a man short.

The result extends Mexico’s unbeaten run at this year’s tournament and marks a significant milestone for the co-hosts, who had endured a long wait for knockout stage success on the World Cup stage. Aguirre’s men now turn their attention to the Round of 16, where they will face either England or DR Congo in what promises to be another electric occasion at the Azteca Stadium, with Mexico’s home advantage and growing confidence making them an increasingly dangerous proposition in the tournament.
