Concerns Grow Over Violence Ahead of Osun Governorship Election
Civil society groups in Osun State have raised the alarm over increasing cases of political violence and insecurity in the state.
These organisations fear that the rising tensions could affect the smooth and peaceful conduct of the upcoming governorship election scheduled for August 15.
They warned that if not properly addressed, the situation might reduce public trust in the electoral process.
The Network of Civil Society Groups in Osun State, in a statement signed by Demola Yaya and Emmanuel Olowu, noted that recent incidents of killings, intimidation, and attacks on politicians and ordinary citizens have created fear among the people. Instead of seeing a drop in tension as the election approaches, the state continues to witness disturbing acts of violence.
The groups called on security agencies and relevant authorities to strengthen safety measures immediately.
The civil society organisations also urged the restructuring of the Osun State Police Command. They believe the current leadership has not shown enough neutrality and has failed to build public confidence.
According to them, a change is needed to promote peace, justice, and better protection for everyone during this important period.
In response, the Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Ibrahim Gotan, dismissed the claims of bias as untrue. He pointed out that under his leadership in the past year, the command has successfully tackled serious crimes such as banditry, cultism, and other vices. He assured residents that the police remain committed to maintaining law and order before, during, and after the election.
This development has highlighted the need for all stakeholders to work together to ensure a free, fair, and violence-free election in Osun State. Many hope that the authorities will take swift action to calm tensions and provide adequate security so that voters can exercise their rights without fear.
