Lagos Shuts Oshodi Market Over Attack on Sanitation Officers
The Lagos State Government has shut down the Oshodi Resettlement Market following an attack on officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC).
The closure was announced by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab. The market will remain closed indefinitely as investigations continue.
According to the commissioner, traders at the market obstructed LAGESC officers carrying out their lawful duties. The situation escalated when traders attacked the sanitation personnel and prevented them from arresting suspected hoodlums and beggars. The commissioner further alleged that the suspects vandalised operational vehicles belonging to the agency.
Wahab explained that the traders attacked officers and prevented them from arresting hoodlums who vandalised the agency’s vehicles. The incident occurred during an enforcement exercise in Oshodi on Monday. The attack has been condemned as an act of lawlessness.
The closure of the busy market will disrupt business for thousands of traders and customers. Many rely on the facility for their daily livelihoods, and the shutdown will cause significant hardship. However, the government has made it clear that attacks on public officials will not be tolerated.
The commissioner did not state when the market would be reopened but said investigations are ongoing. The government has promised to bring those responsible to justice. For now, the market remains shut, and traders must wait for the outcome of the investigation.
