NDC Defends Primary Election Process, Rejects Allegations of Candidate Imposition

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has defended the conduct of its recent primary elections, dismissing allegations that candidates were imposed on party members ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party's National Secretary, Morgan Enekweizu, said the primaries were conducted in accordance with the party's constitution and electoral guidelines, insisting that the process reflected the democratic wishes of members across the country.

Enekweizu described claims of candidate imposition as misleading and unfounded, stressing that the party adopted lawful procedures throughout the exercise.

According to him, consensus arrangements reached in some constituencies were achieved through consultations among stakeholders and not through the imposition of preferred candidates. "The NDC remains committed to internal democracy and transparency.

Every decision taken during the primary process was guided by the provisions of our constitution and the Electoral Act," he said.

The party's response follows growing criticism from some aspirants and members who alleged irregularities and favouritism during the primaries.

However, the NDC maintained that all duly screened aspirants were given the opportunity to participate in the process. Party officials also cautioned members against relying on unofficial election results and endorsement lists circulating on social media, describing them as fake and unauthorised.

The leadership stated that only the appropriate party organs are empowered to announce and ratify primary election outcomes.

The NDC further noted that electoral officials and observers monitored the primaries, while designated party committees handled collation and verification of results to ensure credibility and fairness.

As political parties continue preparations for the 2027 elections, the NDC reiterated its commitment to strengthening internal democracy and fostering unity among members.

The party urged aggrieved members to utilise internal dispute-resolution mechanisms and work together to advance its objectives ahead of the next electoral cycle.
