Monthly Sanitation Exercise Has Come to Stay, Insists Lagos Govt

The Lagos State Government has declared that the monthly sanitation exercise is here to stay. Officials made it clear that there are no plans to cancel or suspend the long-standing program. The announcement comes after rumors suggested the government might be considering an end to the exercise.

For many years, Lagos has set aside one Saturday every month for residents to clean their surroundings. During the sanitation hours, movement is restricted, and streets are expected to be empty. The government says this practice has helped keep Nigeria’s largest city clean and reduce flooding caused by blocked drainage.

According to state officials, the rumors about canceling the exercise were false. They explained that the sanitation program is a vital part of Lagos’ environmental plan. Without it, they argued, garbage would pile up faster than the government can manage. They urged residents to continue following the rules on sanitation days.

The government also warned that enforcement teams will still be on the ground to catch violators. Anyone found moving around during sanitation hours will face penalties. However, officials added that essential workers and emergency services are always exempted. They encouraged residents to use the time to clean their homes and neighborhoods instead of staying indoors doing nothing.

Reactions from Lagos residents have been mixed. Some support the exercise and believe it keeps the city healthy. Others complain that the movement restriction disrupts businesses and weekend plans. But the government remains firm: the monthly sanitation exercise has come to stay, and everyone must comply. For now, Lagosians will have to keep their brooms ready every month.
