Federal High Court Opens Registries Weekends for Pre-Election Cases

The Federal High Court of Nigeria has directed all its registries nationwide to operate on weekends and public holidays for the filing of pre-election matters ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The directive was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by the Chief Registrar of the court, Yahaya Shafa.

According to the statement, registries across all divisions of the court will open between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on weekends and public holidays exclusively for pre-election cases.

The court said the measure became necessary due to the constitutional and statutory deadlines governing the filing and determination of pre-election disputes.

The statement noted that the arrangement was introduced to ensure compliance with the limited time frame allowed for handling election-related matters before the polls.

Political parties across Nigeria have intensified preparations for the 2027 elections in recent weeks, with several parties already conducting primaries for governorship, National Assembly and state assembly positions.

The development is expected to ease the filing process for legal practitioners and political actors involved in pre-election litigation across the country.
