Sandra Okunzuwa Opens Up on Personal Cost of Playing Romantic Roles

Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Sandra Okunzuwa has spoken candidly about the toll that filming intimate scenes can take on an actor’s personal life, revealing that a romantic scene in one of her films was directly responsible for the collapse of a past relationship.

The actress made the disclosure during an appearance on the BTS Reality podcast, where she offered a rare and unguarded account of the tensions that can arise when a partner struggles to separate reel life from real life.

Okunzuwa recounted that the relationship ended after an unnamed third party allegedly sent her then-boyfriend a video clip from one of her movies in which she kissed a male co-star. The moment the clip reached him, he called her and announced that he had seen the footage and shortly after, he walked away from the relationship.

The actress said that at the time, she viewed his reaction as rooted in insecurity, particularly because he had known she was an actress from the very beginning of their courtship and had watched her films before they began dating. “He knew very well that I was an actress before we even started dating,” she noted, expressing surprise that a professional scene could be the undoing of what they had built together.

But beyond describing what happened, Okunzuwa used the platform to challenge a widespread misconception about what filming romantic scenes actually involves. She was emphatic that on-screen kisses are far from the intimate, enjoyable experiences that audiences might imagine them to be.

She described a set environment in which approximately twenty crew members are present during the filming of such scenes, with the director continuously issuing instructions, the air conditioning switched off to reduce background noise and the entire process being monitored closely from all sides. In those conditions, she argued, there is simply no room for any personal emotion or connection. “So how can anyone be in the mood or turned on in such conditions and environment?” she asked.

She further, stated that if it were technically possible to remove kissing scenes from films without diminishing the viewer’s experience, she would gladly support such a move, a remark that underscored just how uncomfortable those moments on set can be for the actors involved.

Okunzuwa was careful, however, not to be dismissive of partners who struggle with the demands of dating someone in the entertainment industry. She acknowledged that intimacy thresholds differ from person to person and that everyone is entitled to decide what they can and cannot accept in a relationship. She urged audiences to remember that actors are always playing characters and that nothing on screen should be read as a reflection of their personal feelings or private lives. At the same time, she issued what amounted to a quiet but firm piece of advice: if the realities of an actor’s profession are too much to handle, it is better to make that determination before the relationship begins rather than after. “I don’t blame people who say they can’t date actors,” she said, “because everyone has to choose what they can tolerate in a partner.”
