Judiciary Is Bedrock of Modern Society, Independence Must Never Be Compromised, Says Uba Sani

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has declared that the judiciary remains the single most indispensable institution in any modern society, insisting that its independence, integrity and institutional strength must be jealously guarded and never allowed to erode.

The governor made the declaration on Monday during the commissioning of the Justice Muhammadu Bello Bar Centre in Kaduna, an event that also marked the official opening of the Nigerian Bar Association Kaduna Branch Law Week 2026.

Governor Sani described the judiciary as the guardian of constitutional order, the protector of civil liberties, the defender of due process and the custodian of societal equilibrium.

He noted that in moments of national uncertainty and political strain, it is invariably to the courts that citizens turn for the reassurance that justice, fairness and reason will ultimately prevail a role that, in his view, places an enormous and irreplaceable burden of responsibility on every arm of the justice sector. He was emphatic that no government serious about democratic stability could afford to be indifferent to the health of its judicial institutions.

Speaking on the commitment of his administration to the legal ecosystem in Kaduna State, the governor acknowledged the pivotal role that both the judiciary and the legal profession play in sustaining democratic governance, promoting peaceful coexistence, protecting individual rights, resolving civil and commercial disputes and deepening public trust in the instruments of government. He said his administration fully recognised this role and was resolved to continue supporting institutional development within the justice sector, pointing to the completion and commissioning of the Justice Muhammadu Bello Bar Centre as a concrete expression of that commitment.

Sani also used the occasion to address the theme of the 2026 Law Week “ACTIVATE! Empowering Lawyers in the Digital Age” describing it as particularly timely given the pace at which artificial intelligence, digital communication and emerging technologies are reshaping governance structures, economic systems, legal practice and evidentiary standards around the world.

He urged legal practitioners not to wait passively for technological change to overtake them but to position themselves as active architects of that transformation, developing technological literacy alongside traditional legal scholarship while remaining anchored in the ethical foundations of the profession.

The commissioning of the Bar Centre, named in honour of the late Justice Muhammadu Bello, a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, drew the attendance of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, who described the occasion as symbolic of the enduring resilience and progressive vision of the Nigerian legal profession.

Fagbemi paid tribute to the legacy of Justice Bello, whom he described as an icon of judicial integrity and intellectual distinction whose contributions to Nigerian jurisprudence remain enduring. He also commended Governor Sani for his sustained support of institutional development and the rule of law in Kaduna State.
