Two Slain, Five Abducted as Gunmen Raid Plateau Village
Gunmen launched a deadly invasion of the Furyam Takzul community in the Kantana Ward of Kanam Local Government Area, Plateau State, in the early hours of Sunday, May 10, 2026.
The attack, which occurred around 12:05 a.m., resulted in the deaths of two residents and the abduction of five others, including women and children.
According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants stormed the village in large numbers, firing sporadically into the air to create panic. The sudden and violent nature of the raid forced many residents to flee their homes into the surrounding bushes for safety, leaving the community in a state of total devastation.
Haruna Khalid, the youth leader of the Furyam Takzul community, confirmed the incident to journalists, describing the attack as a traumatic experience for the villagers.
He lamented that the gunmen operated with little resistance before whisking the five victims away to an unknown destination, leaving behind a trail of grief and fear.
The community is currently under a cloud of uncertainty, as the whereabouts of the abducted residents remain unknown. Khalid and other local leaders have made an urgent appeal to security agencies to intensify surveillance and deploy more personnel to vulnerable rural areas in Kanam to prevent a recurrence of such tragedies.
As of Sunday morning, official confirmation from the Plateau State Police Command or the military task force, Operation Safe Haven, was still pending. This latest raid follows a pattern of increasing insecurity in the region, which has seen several communities in Plateau State grappling with targeted killings and kidnapping for ransom.
