A fire on Saturday destroyed nine lock-up shops at the Nigerian Railway shopping complex along Aleshinloye Market in Ibadan South-West Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Goods, household items and other properties worth millions of naira were lost in the blaze.

The fire started around 5 a.m. Residents living nearby alerted shop owners at about 6 a.m. One of the affected traders, Busari Olayemi, who runs an interior decoration business, said products worth about N21 million were destroyed, including window blinds, curtain fabrics, industrial sewing machines and other equipment.

The Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Moroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident. He said the agency received a call at 5:58 a.m. reporting the outbreak at the complex.

Firefighters led by Chief Fire Superintendent Adesina quickly mobilised to the scene and found nine shops engulfed in flames with thick smoke. A second fire truck carrying 10,000 litres of water was later deployed. The combined teams brought the fire under control and prevented it from spreading to nearby shops.

No one was injured in the incident. Preliminary investigations suggested the fire was caused by an electrical surge that ignited combustible materials inside the shops. Officials urged members of the public to remain vigilant and fire-conscious at all times.
