Kogi Varsity Student with Mental Health Challenges Beaten to Death by Vigilantes

In a tragic incident that has sparked outrage in Kogi State, a mentally challenged student of the Kogi State University (KSU), Anyigba, was reportedly beaten to death by members of a local vigilante group.

The victim, identified as a promising youth within the university community, was allegedly accosted by the security operatives who claimed to be enforcing order in the area.

Witnesses report that the student’s behavior, attributed to his mental health condition, was misunderstood by the vigilantes as a threat or a form of criminal provocation. Instead of de-escalating the situation or handing him over to medical or police authorities, the operatives reportedly resorted to severe physical assault, inflicting injuries that ultimately led to his demise.

The news of the killing has sent shockwaves through the university, with students and staff expressing deep grief and calling for the immediate disbandment of the vigilante group involved. Protests have begun to brew on social media, with many questioning the training and authority of local security outfits that operate without proper oversight or psychological assessment.

The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed that an investigation is underway to identify and arrest the individuals responsible for the assault. Authorities have appealed for calm, urging the student body to refrain from taking the law into their own hands while the legal process takes its course.

Human rights advocates have condemned the act, describing it as a blatant violation of the right to life and a reflection of the poor treatment of mentally ill individuals in society. They are demanding that the state government implement stricter regulations for vigilante groups to prevent further extra-judicial killings and ensure that such outfits are held to the same standards as formal law enforcement.

As the community mourns the loss of the student, the incident highlights the urgent need for mental health awareness and the professionalization of local security structures to protect, rather than harm, the most vulnerable members of society.
