Bill to Increase Police Funding Passes Second Reading
A bill that seeks to increase funding for the Nigeria Police Force has passed second reading in the National Assembly. The proposed law now moves to the next stage of the legislative process.
The bill aims to allocate more money to police salaries, equipment, and training. Lawmakers who supported the bill argued that underfunding has been a major reason for the force’s poor performance. They believe more resources will help officers fight crime more effectively.
Nigeria’s police force has long struggled with inadequate funding. Many stations lack working vehicles, modern weapons, or even basic communication tools. Low pay has also made some officers vulnerable to bribery and corruption.
Opponents of the bill raised concerns about how the extra money would be spent. They want strict oversight to ensure that new funds do not simply disappear due to corruption. Some suggested that police reforms must go hand in hand with more money.
The bill will now be sent to a committee for detailed review. If it eventually becomes law, Nigerians could see better-equipped police stations and better-trained officers.
However, many citizens say they will believe it only when they see real changes on the streets.
