Oyo Police Assure Residents of Security Ahead of December 29 LG Poll
The Oyo State Police Command has formally guaranteed comprehensive security arrangements ahead of the state’s local government elections, which are scheduled to take place on December 29, 2026.
This assurance was issued by the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Olugbenga, as part of proactive measures to ensure a stable environment for the electoral process.
The commitment was solidified during a courtesy visit paid by the leadership of the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) to the state police headquarters located at Eleyele, Ibadan.
The visit provided an opportunity for both the electoral body and the police to align their strategies for the upcoming exercise.
During the engagement, Commissioner Olugbenga pledged the command’s “100 per cent support” for the electoral process. He emphasized that the police are fully prepared to safeguard lives and property, ensuring that security is maintained effectively before, during, and after the casting of ballots.
Reflecting on the importance of the command’s role, the Commissioner asserted that a peaceful atmosphere is the only prerequisite for conducting free, fair, and credible elections. He expressed his determination to ensure that the 2026 elections reflect the success of past exercises, noting that the command aims to set a standard for other states to emulate in their own electoral conduct.
Representing the commission, OYSIEC Chairman Afees Adeniyi noted that the visit served to formally communicate their readiness to organize an election free from intimidation. He highlighted that members of the public frequently voice concerns regarding their safety during polling, making the call for a strong, collaborative relationship with the police essential to fostering public confidence.
Adeniyi took the opportunity to commend the command for its significant contribution during the 2024 local government elections.
He expressed the commission’s desire for continued cooperation and sustained synergy with the police force, viewing this partnership as a cornerstone for delivering a successful and peaceful electoral experience for the residents of Oyo State.
