Osun Government Deposes Apetumodu of Ipetumodu, Declares Stool Vacant

The Osun State Government has officially removed the Apetumodu of Ipetumodu, Oba Joseph Olugbenga Oloyede, from office following his conviction and imprisonment in the United States over fraud-related offences.

The decision was approved by the State Executive Council and announced on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi.

The government said the action followed due consultation and legal review in line with the Osun State Chiefs Law governing traditional institutions in the state.

According to the government, Oba Oloyede’s removal became necessary after his conviction in the United States for offences linked to COVID-19 relief fund fraud, for which he is currently serving a prison sentence.

His staff of office and all instruments of authority have been withdrawn with immediate effect. Following the development, the Osun State Government declared the Apetumodu stool of Ipetumodu vacant.

It also directed security agencies to ensure peace and stability in the community while urging residents, kingmakers, and stakeholders to remain calm. The government further stated that the process for selecting a new traditional ruler would commence in line with established customs and legal procedures guiding succession to the throne.Oba Joseph Oloyede ascended the throne in 2019.

However, his reign became controversial after reports of his conviction abroad, which later led to growing calls within the community for his removal and the declaration of the stool as vacant.
