Police Order Release of Student Arrested Over Alleged Assault in Osun

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 11 Headquarters, Osogbo, Bassey Ewah, has directed the immediate release of a student arrested in connection with a viral video showing police officers allegedly assaulting a young man in Ede, Osun State.

The directive followed a meeting held on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, between the AIG, representatives of the student community and the affected student, during which concerns surrounding the incident were discussed.

The video, which circulated widely on social media after being posted on X by Oyekola A. Samuel, popularly known as @OKollyp, captured officers in police uniforms allegedly beating and manhandling a young man, while a woman at the scene appealed to them to stop.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ojedele Olanrewaju Tunji, disclosed that Ewah had ordered the student’s release and promised a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

The police spokesperson identified the officers allegedly involved as operatives of the Zone 11 Cybercrime Unit, adding that the AIG had assured the students that the circumstances surrounding the incident would be examined thoroughly and impartially.

Ewah also reiterated the importance of discipline, professionalism and accountability in police operations, stressing that officers must uphold these standards in the performance of their duties.

He further assured members of the public that the findings of the investigation would be made available once the process had been completed.

The AIG appealed to residents to remain calm and conduct themselves lawfully, noting that necessary measures were being taken to address the incident and ensure that justice was served.
