Lagos Govt Installed Disputed Yakoyo Signboard, Not Council, Says Ojodu Chairman

The Chairman of Ojodu Local Council Development Area in Lagos State, David Odunmbaku, has denied erecting a disputed boundary signboard at Yakoyo. He said the signboard was installed by the Lagos State Government and not by his council.

Odunmbaku was reacting to an allegation by the Chairman of Ifo Local Government Area in Ogun State, Idris Kusimo. Kusimo had accused him of erecting a signboard bearing the inscription Welcome to Lagos at the Yakoyo end of Odozie Yakoyo Road, insisting that the area belongs to Ogun State.

In a statement obtained on Thursday, Odunmbaku described the allegation as incorrect and misleading. He said the installation of boundary markers was not the responsibility of the Ojodu council, but that of the Lagos State Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development.

He explained that the signboard followed a joint boundary reconnaissance exercise involving officials from Lagos and Ogun states. He said the exercise was coordinated by the directors of boundary matters in both states, who conducted an assessment of the disputed area and identified state boundary beacons.

Odunmbaku said the exercise established that the disputed territory extended to Association Avenue in Yakoyo, while a stream served as the natural boundary separating Ojodu from Alagbole. He said the position was supported by the Ojodu geo referenced boundary map, which he described as evidence of the established delineation.

He added that the ministry accepted the outcome of the exercise and installed the boundary signboard on October 20, 2026. He also alleged that the signboard had repeatedly been removed by individuals suspected to be from Ifo Local Government, and that the matter had been reported to the ministry for necessary action.

Kusimo had earlier urged the Lagos State Government to intervene, saying the signboard could create confusion over the boundary between the two states. He called for an objective determination of the boundary through official records and approved survey coordinates. Both councils have now called for restraint, while awaiting further directives from the relevant authorities.
