Arewa Revival Project Urges Objective Review of 10th National Assembly Amid Melaye’s Criticism

The Arewa Revival Project has called for an evidence-based assessment of the performance of the 10th National Assembly following criticism by former Kogi East Senator Dino Melaye, who described the current Senate as the worst in Nigeria’s democratic history.

Melaye had also accused the Senate of functioning as an extension of President Bola Tinubu’s Presidential Villa, raising concerns about the legislature’s independence.

However, in a statement issued on Wednesday, the organisation’s Project Coordinator, Muttaka Ibrahim, argued that the performance of the National Assembly should be evaluated based on its legislative output, constitutional duties and verifiable records rather than personal opinions.

The group acknowledged that public institutions were subject to criticism in a democracy but maintained that such assessments should be supported by facts, responsible analysis and measurable performance indicators.

It also addressed concerns about the relationship between the Executive and Legislature, stressing that cooperation between the two arms of government should not come at the expense of their constitutional independence.

According to the organisation, the Constitution does not require lawmakers to reject every presidential proposal to establish their independence, noting that effective governance depends on constructive engagement while each arm maintains its statutory responsibilities.

The Arewa Revival Project identified lawmaking, budgetary appropriation, oversight of government activities and the protection of constitutional order as key responsibilities through which the National Assembly should be assessed.

It further urged that the Senate under the leadership of Senate President Godswill Akpabio be evaluated through its legislative records, institutional performance and leadership activities.

The group, however, emphasised that the Senate President and other lawmakers must remain accountable to Nigerians and subject to public scrutiny.

It called on political stakeholders to prioritise constructive engagement, transparency and accountability, as well as the presentation of alternative policies that address citizens’ concerns.

The organisation also reaffirmed its commitment to democratic stability, national unity, responsible governance and the Renewed Hope agenda.
