Aro Hospital Investigates Death of Nursing Student Over Alleged Medical Negligence

The management of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State, has commenced an investigation into the death of a Post-Basic Nursing student, Taiwo Godwin, following allegations of medical negligence during treatment for an asthma attack.

Godwin reportedly died while receiving treatment at the hospital’s General Medical Practice Unit after he was brought in following an asthma-related breathing crisis.

According to reports, the deceased developed difficulty breathing while playing football and was subsequently taken to the hospital for emergency medical attention.

A colleague who was reportedly present during the incident alleged that Godwin was still able to walk into the hospital’s emergency unit when he arrived. However, his condition allegedly deteriorated shortly afterwards.

The source claimed that medical personnel attending to the student failed to administer oxygen despite his worsening respiratory condition.

The colleague further alleged that although oxygen equipment had been connected to Godwin, the supply was not turned on. The source also claimed that attempts by the medical team to establish intravenous access and secure the student’s airway were unsuccessful or encountered difficulties.

The allegations have prompted the hospital management to launch an internal investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the hospital expressed sadness over the incident and assured students, staff and members of the public that the investigation would be conducted in line with established procedures.

The statement, signed by the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Abiola Ajibola, on behalf of the Acting Provost and Medical Director, said the process would be thorough, impartial and transparent.

Management said it would expedite the investigation and take appropriate action based on its findings.

“We further assure all concerned that every necessary step will be taken to establish the facts, address any issues identified, and ensure that justice is served,” the statement said.

The hospital also pledged to cooperate with relevant authorities and other stakeholders involved in the investigation.

While acknowledging the concerns and emotions generated by the incident, the management appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid prejudging the outcome of the investigation.

It reaffirmed its commitment to patient safety, professional accountability and the provision of quality medical care.

The hospital also extended its condolences to Godwin’s family, friends, colleagues, fellow students and members of the nursing community following his death.
