Florida Teen Arrested for Using AI-Edited Image to Falsely Accuse Ex-Boyfriend of School Shooting Threat

A 15-year-old girl in Florida has been arrested after allegedly using an image modified with artificial intelligence (AI) to falsely implicate her former boyfriend in a threat to carry out a shooting at a school.

Authorities said deputies were dispatched to Riverview High School on Wednesday, October 14, after school administrators received an email containing a screenshot of an Instagram post threatening a shooting on the campus.

The post appeared to have been published by a male student at the school, prompting investigators to question him over the alleged threat.

However, detectives later established that the student was not responsible for the post and traced it to his 15-year-old ex-girlfriend, who previously attended the school.

During questioning, the teenager reportedly admitted to sending the email to school administrators while knowing that the image attached to it had been altered using artificial intelligence.

Following the investigation, she was arrested and charged with making a written or electronic threat to carry out a mass shooting or act of terrorism, unlawfully using a two-way communications device, and disrupting school activities.

The case highlights concerns over the misuse of artificial intelligence to fabricate digital evidence, falsely implicate individuals and trigger security investigations.

The charges against the teenager are yet to be resolved in court.
