UCH Resident Doctors Suspend Warning Strike, Resume Work
The Association of Resident Doctors at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, has suspended its three-day warning strike, directing members to return to their duty posts from 8 a.m. on Thursday.
The decision was communicated in a memo signed by the association’s President, Dr Uthman Adedeji, and General Secretary, Dr Mary Awodiji, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Ibadan on Thursday.
The association said the warning strike had ended following resolutions reached at its emergency general meeting, adding that members were expected to resume their duties immediately.
It also informed members that further updates would be provided to the association’s congress within specified timelines.
The doctors began the three-day industrial action on Monday to protest persistent power outages and severe water shortages around the College of Medicine axis of the hospital.
Their demands include the immediate restoration of electricity to the affected area, urgent repairs to faulty circuit breakers to provide backup power and a reliable electricity supply across all sections of the hospital.
The association has also issued the hospital management a seven-day ultimatum, running from October 12 to October 19, to address its grievances.
It warned that failure to meet the demands within the stipulated period could lead to an indefinite strike.
The suspension of the warning strike comes as the association continues to press for improvements in essential utilities and working conditions at the tertiary healthcare facility.
