Lagos Announces Traffic Diversion on Independence Bridge for Urgent Repairs
The Lagos State Government has announced a temporary traffic diversion on the Independence Bridge in Lagos Island.
The move is to allow the Federal Ministry of Works to carry out urgent asphalt repairs on the bridge.
The repair work is scheduled to begin on the night of Friday, 16 October 2026, and will continue through Saturday, 17 October, and Sunday, 18 October. Both inbound and outbound lanes will be affected during the exercise.
According to the Commissioner for Transportation, traffic management measures will be put in place to reduce inconvenience. Each section of the bridge will be partially closed at a time, while one lane remains open so motorists can still pass through.
The government has advised drivers to plan their journeys in advance and use alternative routes where possible. Officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority will be deployed around the bridge to control traffic and keep vehicles moving as smoothly as possible.
Motorists travelling through Lagos Island and nearby areas have been urged to allow extra time for their trips, remain patient, obey traffic rules and cooperate fully with officials throughout the repair period.
