Champions League: PSG Tame Man City, Real Madrid Pull Off Rome Escape, Villa Crush Fenerbahce
Paris Saint-Germain showed why they are the team to beat in Europe, winning 4-2 at Manchester City on Wednesday night. The result was the highlight of a second matchday that produced 46 goals across nine games.
The holders were ruthless at the Etihad. Desire Doue struck on 13 minutes, Ousmane Dembele added a second two minutes later, and Vitinha made it 3-0 before the half-hour mark. Erling Haaland scored twice after the break to keep City in it. In doing so, he became the club’s all-time leading scorer in the competition. But Maghnes Akliouche restored PSG’s three-goal cushion, and Gianluigi Donnarumma saved a late PSG penalty. It was City’s first defeat of the season, and their first home game since the Premier League panel’s guilty verdict on financial breaches.
In Rome, Real Madrid came from 3-1 down to beat Roma 4-3. Marten de Roon opened the scoring, Kylian Mbappe equalised on his 100th Champions League appearance, and Donyell Malen’s two goals put the hosts back in control. Madrid then scored three times in the last eight minutes. Carlos Espi pulled one back, Endrick levelled with a header from a corner, and Antonio Rudiger headed the winner from an Arda Guler delivery.
Aston Villa were the biggest winners of the night, beating Fenerbahce 6-0 at Villa Park. Johan Manzambi opened the scoring on his 21st birthday, Nicolas Jackson and Ross Barkley each scored twice, and Tammy Abraham added the sixth. At LASK, Liverpool won 6-3 thanks to a hat-trick from Bradley Barcola, with Ronald Araujo, Jeremie Frimpong and Lewis Koumas also on target. LASK scored through Robert Ljubicic and a Florian Flecker brace.
There was an upset in Norway, where Bodo/Glimt beat Borussia Dortmund 1-0 through Fredrik Sjovold’s 52nd-minute goal. Real Betis beat Porto 3-2, with Isco’s 84th-minute penalty settling it after Cucho Hernandez had levelled. VfB Stuttgart won 3-0 at Slovan Bratislava, and Feyenoord claimed their first win with a 3-2 victory over Como, helped by an 81st-minute own goal. Shakhtar Donetsk beat AEK Athens 3-1 in their home fixture at Stamford Bridge in London.
PSG, Villa, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Betis and Stuttgart all have six points from two games. Matchday 3 starts on October 20 with PSG against Barcelona, Liverpool against Villarreal, and City against AEK Athens.
