Saudi-led Forces Intercept Houthi Missile as Fighting Widens in Taiz

Saudi-led coalition forces said they shot down a ballistic missile fired by Yemen’s Houthis at Khamis Mushait on Tuesday, as ground fighting continued in Taiz and around the Bab al-Mandab strait.

Coalition spokesman Major-General Turki al-Malki said the missile was intercepted. He also said coalition aircraft destroyed a ballistic-missile launcher in Sanaa and a depot in a mountain site in Saada that held 20 missiles. Saudi outlets reported attacks on Jizan and Najran airports, with injuries and damage, and air strikes on Houthi weapons sites in Yemen.

Yemeni government forces and allied fighters said about 100 Houthi fighters were killed and 150 wounded in the Taiz axis under an operation they called Dawn of Yemen, launched on Monday. They also claimed five drones and several vehicles were destroyed.

Those figures come from the government side and have not been independently confirmed. Houthi sources have given lower counts from earlier clashes in Taiz and Lahj.

Government officials said forces had retaken ground around Bab al-Mandab, including Dhubab, and had moved on Mocha. The Houthis said they had taken Turbah and were pressing toward Taiz city, Yemen’s third-largest. Al Jazeera reported civilians trapped in Taiz as displacement rose.

The Houthis said their strikes on Saudi energy and military sites answered coalition air raids. Saudi Arabia said it was protecting the strait and backing the internationally recognised government.

The exchanges sit inside a wider Iran war that has pulled Yemen’s civil war back into open fighting since July, when the Houthis announced a maritime blockade aimed at Riyadh.

Neither side has published a verified civilian toll for Tuesday’s fighting.
