Northern Group Backs Christian, Muslim Youth Peace Accord Ahead of 2027
The Northern Muslims/Christians for Peace and Progress Initiative has endorsed the peace accord between the Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN) and the National Council of Muslim Youth Organisations (NACOMYO).
The group said the agreement could strengthen religious tolerance, dialogue and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians, particularly as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.
In a statement on Tuesday, its National Coordinator, Bukar Al-Amin, said the accord reflected a joint commitment by Christian and Muslim youths to promote understanding and responsible participation in Nigeria’s democratic process.
The initiative also commended Seyi Tinubu for supporting and promoting the peace initiative, describing his involvement as an effort to build bridges across religious and social divides.
The group said the agreement should not be viewed merely as a formal document but as a commitment by young Christians and Muslims to reject religious intolerance, hate speech, political violence and the use of religion to promote division.
It pledged to support the implementation of the accord beyond the national level by promoting its objectives across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, states, local government areas and communities.
The initiative said it would collaborate with YOWICAN, NACOMYO, religious bodies, traditional institutions, civil society organisations and youth groups to take the peace initiative to the grassroots.
It urged Nigerians, particularly young people, to embrace dialogue and tolerance despite differences in religion and political affiliation.
The group maintained that peaceful coexistence remained essential to Nigeria’s unity and development, stressing that citizens may belong to different faiths and hold different political views but share a common future.
