Kano Police Warn Sanusi, Bayero of Arrest Over Durbar, Horse Riding Ban

Security agencies in Kano State have warned the two rival claimants to the Kano Emirate throne, Muhammadu Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero, that they could be arrested if they violate the state’s ban on durbar activities and horse riding.

The warning followed an emergency security meeting convened to address recent developments surrounding the activities of the two traditional rulers and concerns over a possible breakdown of peace in the state.

Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, said the executive order prohibiting horse riding and durbar processions remained in force and applied to everyone regardless of status or position.

He said security agencies would take action against any individual or group whose activities threatened public safety or violated the restriction.

The warning came after a recent procession by Aminu Ado Bayero through parts of Kano metropolis, which authorities said was followed by incidents involving the destruction of public property, including campaign banners belonging to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Police said five people were arrested in connection with the incident.

Tensions increased further after Muhammadu Sanusi II appeared on horseback while leading supporters to the 66th Independence Anniversary celebration at the Sani Abacha Stadium on Thursday.

The development reportedly prompted members of Bayero’s camp to threaten a fresh durbar procession, leading security agencies to issue another warning against any activity capable of escalating tensions.

Bakori, who addressed journalists alongside the Director of the Department of State Services in Kano, Abubakar Hussaini, said the joint security meeting had resolved to enforce the restriction strictly.

He said any person, organisation or institution intending to organise a durbar or horse or animal-riding activity in a public place must submit a written notification to the Kano State Police Command at least 72 hours before the event.

According to him, the requirement would allow security agencies to assess the planned activity and make appropriate arrangements for public safety.

The police commissioner said the security concerns that prompted the ban remained relevant and warned all parties against actions that could undermine peace and public order.

The security agencies urged residents and all stakeholders in the emirate dispute to comply with lawful directives and cooperate with security personnel to prevent further tension in the state.
