The Federal Government has approved the comprehensive modernisation and upgrade of the Onne, Rivers, Delta and Calabar ports.

The move aims to expand Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure and reduce the heavy concentration of cargo traffic in Lagos.

Minister of Marine and Blue Economy Adegboyega Oyetola announced the approval in a statement on Sunday. He said the decision builds on earlier plans to modernise Apapa and Tin Can Island ports in Lagos, with the goal of creating a balanced and competitive national port system.

Oyetola explained that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises infrastructure renewal and economic diversification. He noted that modern and efficient ports are essential for facilitating trade, supporting industry, attracting investment and creating jobs.

According to the minister, upgrading the four ports will improve cargo handling, reduce the time vessels spend at berth and strengthen regional connectivity. This is expected to make the movement of goods more predictable and cost-effective for businesses.

The approval forms part of a broader plan that also includes the development of new deep seaports such as Ibom, Bakassi, Agge, Gateway, Ondo and Bonny. Oyetola said the ministry will work with state governments, terminal operators, investors and other stakeholders to ensure the projects deliver real improvements across the maritime sector.
